"The Circle Of Life" & "Just Can't Wait To Be King"
START OF CHAPTER 15 PART 2
Happy Liberation day! Another year, another independence day for Guam. This year Liberation day falls on the release weekend for the live action "Lion King". Never in my life did I think I would witness a live action Lion King. But here we are, a live action Lion King is coming to life. You may be asking yourself, how is Liberation day and the Lion King related? Well, I was born into this world and a right into a Chamorro family. As for the Lion King, my nursery was Lion King themed. Therefore, I was born into this world with Simba and co, by my side. It's something that both of these important aspects of my life are being celebrated during the same weekend. Pushing aside all the screwed up feelings, i've been feeling inside, it is nice to actually just celebrate something so light hearted. Liberation day may seem light hearted now, but Guam had to earn that. I've been reminded about that a lot lately. Hearing stories about how my grandmother was beat up and enslaved. People sometimes overlook that part, in Guam's history. But that is something that has happened. Guam was enslaved and those young children who lived there were abused and had to do things they did not want to do. It amazes me how much the circle of life, truly works. Because aspects of that has carried on over to may generations, including my own. Yes, we may not be enslaved, thank god, but some countries still are. And many young children, men, and woman are still abused to this day. We all know, i've had my fair share of that. It's just fascinating to know that it still spans and carries on over into many generations. We don't know why, that part of the circle of life is unclear, but it just happens. We think we find a way to get away from that part of our past, but it always comes around. The circle of life is very delicate. It is up to us, to do our best with what we are given. Because sometimes the things done before we are born into this world and into our nursery rooms, is out of our control. We go through things, we never imagined we would go through, when our mother's give birth to us. Our mother's hope for the best for us. Then they raise us to the best of their abilities so that we can do better, and learn from the mistakes that were made before we arrived on this planet. This year on Liberation Day, I celebrate the survival of everyone like my grandma, who went through the hard ordeals and fought the fight of their life, before they finally had a taste of freedom.
My nephews are alive and in this world at one of the most special time periods in their life. Getting to take their innocent eyes to witness the Lion King on the big screen, all while celebrating our heritage, that is something I hope they always cherish. They are young, but they can learn from the meanings behind the words of Mufasa and Rafiki. When we are young, we look for the bigger picture. I always saw myself through young Simba's eyes. From the moment "I Just Can't Wait To Be King" came on screen, I always related. Simba pictured what life could be like at the top, but never realized how hard it would be, until he had to step up to the plate for himself. In life, you go back and forth. You go back and forth until you meet yourself in the middle of your circle of life. You can't run from your past, you can't forget it, you can't re do it, but you can see the bigger picture, and work your way to the top of the chain. You sometimes loose sight of the dreams you had created when you dreamed of being at the top. You forget who you are. But like Mufufsa said, remember, remember who you are. You may want to just up and leave. You want to escape all the bad that is around you, but that is not going to help you, or anyone else that you care for. You need to face it head on. You want to be the king or queen of your jungle, you need to step up the plate and address the issues standing in your way. I'm at a place in my life, where I have to do just that. I only hope, my boys don't have to face what I have faced or things anyone else in our family has battled. I know they will have their own issues and own battles to fight, I can't stop that, but I hope I can help prepare them to have the strength they will need on their journey to the top. They will learn as they get older, we go around in this circle of life. We start young, we grow up, we grow old. We gain family, we loose family, we make friends, we loose friends, we fall in love, we fall out of love, but we always get to a place where everything seems familiar, yet different. It's the circle of life. It moves us all. Through despair and hope. Through faith and love. Until we find our place, on the path unwinding. In this circle we call, the circle of life
